What is Cosmetic Botulinum Toxin?

Cosmetic botulinum toxin type A is a purified substance that is derived from bacteria.  Injections of botulinum toxin block the nerve signals to the muscle in which it is injected. Without a signal, the muscle is not able to contract. The end result is diminished unwanted facial wrinkles.

What can Cosmetic Botulinum Toxin do?

  • Relax and soften vertical and horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines that make you look angry, anxious, fearful or fatigued
  • Create a more youthful look by relaxing lines over the cheek area
  • Smooth chin dimpling
  • Lift the outer one third of the brows to elevate the eyebrows and open the eyes for a rested appearance
  • Diminish bunny lines, those lines beside your nose that appear when you crinkle your nose
  • Improve facial symmetry
  • Lift the corners of the mouth to reduce the appearance of marionette lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the chin
  • Address deep upper lip lines
  • Soften the nasolabial folds that run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth
  • Raise the corners of the mouth by relaxing the platysma muscles that facilitate facial expression by lowering the corners of the lower lip
  • Treat aging of the neck created by the age-related downward pull of the platysma muscles that creates vertical neck bands

How should I prepare for my Cosmetic Botulinum toxin injection?

  • If you have a history of cold sores, please inform Dr. White prior to treatment. Dr. White will need to write a prescription to pre-treat to eliminate the chances of you developing a cold sore post treatment.

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications 10-14 days prior to treatment. Medications such as: Aspirin, Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil Supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.

  • Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages 1 week prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising).

  • Schedule your appointment at least 1-2 weeks prior to a special, such as a wedding or a vacation due to risk of bruising and swelling post treatment.

  • Reschedule your appointment at least 48 hours in advance if you have a severe rash, cold sore or blemish in the treatment area.

  • Be sure to have a good breakfast, including food and drink, before your procedure. This will decrease the chances of lightheadedness during your treatment.

  • Consider taking Arnica tablets 1 week prior to injections to prevent bruising (Usage: Dispense 5 pellets under your tongue 3 times a day).

How is the treatment performed?

The cosmetic botulinum toxin procedure is quick and causes only minor, temporary discomfort. A small, thin needle is used to inject cosmetic botulinum toxin into the small facial muscles. The most common side effects are swelling and bruising at the injection site, which will usually resolve within 48 hours.

What can I/cannot do after my Cosmetic Botulinum toxin injection?

  • Do NOT manipulate the treated area for 4 hours following treatment. Do NOT receive facials, facial laser treatments, or microdermabrasion after cosmetic botulinum toxin injections for at least 10 days.

  • Do NOT lie down or perform activities involving straining, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for 4 hours after your cosmetic botulinum toxin treatment. This will prevent the cosmetic botulinum toxin from tracking into the orbit of your eye and causing drooping of the eyelids.

How soon can I expect results?

Cosmetic botulinum toxin can take approximately 4 to 7 days for results to be seen. If the desired result is not seen after 2 weeks of your treatment, you may need additional cosmetic botulinum toxin. Cosmetic botulinum toxin has long-lasting positive effects for 3-4 months and wears off slowly. Keeping up with injections on a regular basis, before lines and wrinkles reappear, trains the treated muscles to contract less often, so that lines appear smoother.
